Driver hits cyclist, may face DUI charges

Colorado Springs police arrested a man early Wednesday morning on suspicion of driving while intoxicated after he hit a bicyclist, knocking him onto the pavement.

Jeffery Givens, 21, was driving eastbound on Pikes Peak Avenue just before 1 a.m., and was swerving between lanes, police said. When he came to the intersection of Hancock and Pikes Peak avenues, he swerved and hit a bicyclist.

Givens hit the cyclist’s back tire, tossing the rider onto the road, and then drove away, police said. Witnesses described the car, a black Chevrolet Cavalier, and license plate to police and Given was caught a few minutes later near Pikes Peak Avenue and Academy Boulevard.

The bicyclist was not seriously injured, police said.

Givens was arrested on suspicion of reckless driving and driving while intoxicated, and was booked into the El Paso County jail.
