The rear-end collision is the most common type of automobile accident. This occurs when one vehicle hits the rear end of another vehicle. About 2.5 million rear-end collisions occur each year. Injuries sustained in the typical rear-end collision usually involve the neck and back. Whiplash and other soft tissue injuries are the most common.
In a rear-end collision, there is clearer evidence of fault than in any other type of auto accident. In most cases, the car that was hit was stopped at a stop light, at a stop sign, or in traffic. Despite the clear evidence of fault, a rear-end accident victim’s injuries may be very difficult to prove because of the nature of the crash dynamics. Keep good notes if you are involved in a rear-end collision.
Rear-end collisions are different from other auto accidents. In most accidents, the driver who is hit is either at a complete stop or only moving at a few miles per hour with no or very little forward momentum. Often, the victim will see the oncoming car in the rear view mirror and expect the collision.
Because of these factors and the low speeds common in these accidents, drivers who are hit in rear-end collisions often suffer the following types of injuries:
Rear-end collisions are mostly the result of inattentive driving due to talking on cell phones, distractions from passengers, or even listening to the radio.
