Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Post Traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an emotional illness that develops as a result of a terribly frightening, life-threatening, or otherwise highly unsafe experience.

PTSD sufferers reexperience the traumatic event or events in some way, tend to avoid places, people, or other things that remind them of the event, and become extremely sensitive to normal life experiences. PTSD has only been recognized as a formal illness since 1980.  It is often seen in soldiers after or during a war, or in private citizens when they have been seriously injured in an accident.

According to a new book published by published by the American Psychological Association (APA), motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) are considered the leading cause of posttraumatic stress disorder in the general population; car accidents are the number one trauma for men and the second most frequent trauma for women.
